Brown
by Aaron Loeb
directed by Molly Aaronson-Gelb
played January 14 – 23, 2005 at La Val's Subterranean in Berkeley

Playwright Aaron Loeb, a veteran of PlayGround's ten-minute play festivals, tried his hand at a full-length piece with Brown. Beth lives in the shadow of her mother, Annika Rot, a famous artist who traveled the world and left Beth to curate her museum when she died. But when Emmy walks through her door, Beth finds her safe, predictable world turned on its head. Why is her unexpected visitor so interested in taking her away from everything she's ever known? Why is the local mechanic, Dan, so curious about them both? And is there more to life than keeping her mother's legacy alive? Nothing is quite as it seems in this fast-paced, poetic, humorous look at what we're willing-and unwilling-to do for the sake of family.
